Hard work has always paid off, but I am discovering new rewards for my sweaty efforts. As the evergreens get taller and fuller, and the service berries produce their fruit, I have noticed more and more beautiful birds in the yard. This last winter, my purple Coneflowers drew the colorful Finches, and the fountain was visited daily by the cardinal couple that lives in the Arborvitae. (That $30 water heater really paid for itself!) As winter thawed to spring I started seeing a new yellow bellied visitor… It might be our state bird, but the meadowlarks were a stranger to me and my yard until this year. I am not sure what attracted them exactly (though they like the fountain as much as all the other feathered friends), but I am glad they found us! Once it was warm enough for Annual flowers, the hummingbirds found my Lantana right away. I find that Lantana, Pentas and the soon to be blooming Red Cannas are much easier than keeping a hummingbird feeder clean and full.
I can’t personally take credit for the most exciting visitor we had this year, but can be collectively proud of our community and nation for the conservation efforts and raised ecological awareness that brought him back. Our neighborhood has big lots, and big trees, but it is smack dab in the middle of the city, so it was a real treat to have a Bald Eagle soaring less than 10 feet away from me. When I started the landscape at our house, I was really only focused on the usual wants… Color, privacy, shade etc. While working to achieve those things, it is an incredible treat to get the added bonus of all these colorful feathers
