Here are some pro tips from one of our landscape designers to help you prepare for your first landscape consultation. Knowing what to expect, and being prepared with answers to the questions your designer may ask, will help you get the most out of your consultation and design experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Your designer will arrive and want to do a walk through of the entire property. They should point out anything that they feel might be a problem: drainage issues, tree roots, sun\/shade issues. After the walk through there should be a discussion where you are both able to take notes if needed.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First, research the companies that are in your area or get referrals from friends that have had landscaping services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then determine what it is you want done:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

-Just plant material? Are there any plants you especially like, or don\u2019t like? Are you going to maintain the yard yourself, or hire someone to do it for you?<\/span><\/p>\n

-A patio \u2013 what kind of materials? Do you like the look of concrete block, or natural stone? <\/span>
\n<\/span>Do you want a fire pit? If so, do you want it to use natural gas, or be wood burning?<\/span><\/p>\n

-A water feature? Do you want an open pond, or a pondless waterfall, or a fountain?<\/span><\/p>\n

After your designer visits your property and puts together a design, you will have a second consultation to discuss ideas and options for your landscape<\/p><\/div>\n

Discuss with whomever has an opinion in your household ahead of time, so you are both on the same page. I have to say, nothing is more difficult than trying to put a design together when the two people making decisions are wanting different things.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your designer will want to know if you have style or color preferences, and if you prefer mulch or rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

If there are plants you really like or dislike, let them know.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you have specific needs like a ramp for an entrance, be sure to include that in the conversation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Determine your budget (this is important).\u00a0 Your landscape designer will try to work within your budget if you want them to.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you want a dream design to install over several years, let them know.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You also need to be honest with yourself how much maintenance you are willing to do. Some companies offer a maintenance service for people that want to commit to a landscape they won’t be able to maintain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Any landscaping company that can do your installation immediately needs to be investigated further \u2013 most companies are scheduling several months to a year out for their services.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
